A recurring theme in these works is a sense of emptiness and space. On reflection this hasn’t been a conscious decision but more an instinctive response to a landscape I am still slightly in awe of.

My travels have taken me to remote locations where the roads narrow, to the edges of water late in the day - urgently painting with the remnants of fading western light.

There have been hazzards along the way too. Not the continuing battle with the elements, but more with the struggle to avoid the romantic visual cliches inherent in depicting a country of such magificence, harshness and beauty.

I am still struggling to define what Glasgow means to me. I see it as a city in flux - grand, austere, stoic and bloody-minded. For such a major city, I am often struck by its emptiness. It is these characteristics that I have tried to embody in my work.

The paintings in this exhibition are a selection from a series created over the last eight months, and represents an ongoing personal journey to document a place I now call home.

Dan Williams lectures in illustration in the Visual Communications department at Glasgow School of Art.
